(2) Butovo Killing Field
On the southern edge of Moscow, near a new wealthy suburb and a network of brand new roads, the Butovo Killing Field is a grim reminder of the Soviet era. Mass graves, two churches and several large crosses mark the place where for thirty years the Soviet authorities had around five hundred people shot daily: a minority of the victims are Christian martyrs now canonised by the Orthodox Church.
